Christmas Tree Facts

  •  For every real Christmas tree harvested, two to three seedlings are planted in its place.
  • There are about 1 million acres in Christmas trees production. Each acre provides the daily oxygen requirements of 18 people.
  • There are approximately 5,000 choose and cut farms in the U.S.
  • It can take as many as 15 years to grow a tree of average retail sale height (6 feet), but the average growing time is 7 years.
  • The top Christmas tree producing states are; Oregon, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, California, and North Carolina.
  • The top selling Christmas trees are: Balsam fir, Douglas fir, Fraser fir, Scotch pine, White Pine, and Virginia Pine
  • Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United states since about 1850.
  • Until fairly recently, all Christmas trees came from the forest.
  • The first decorated Christmas was in Riga, Latvia in 1510.
  • There are approximately 25-30 million real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year.
  • Christmas trees are grown in all 50 states.
  • In the United States, there are more than 12,000 cut-your-own farms.
  • In 1856 Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States, was the first President to place a Christmas tree in the White House.
  • In 1963, the National Christmas Tree was not lighted until December 22nd because of a national 30-day period of mourning following the assassination of President Kennedy.
